Book: Do the work

The full title is “Do the Work: Overcome Resistance and Get Out of Your Own Way,” and it’s quite true. Many times we get into our own way because we overthink and underperform. Why you stop doing things or not even start them, like new year’s resolutions or a goal you want to achieve? If it’s something you really want, it’s strange that most of us give up, but this book explains why.

Book premise

The book goes through what the author calls “The Resistance,” and it’s a powerful force that stops you from achieving your dreams and goals. We’re constantly waiting for when “we’re ready.” When the market is right. If I have enough money. When I have someone to help me.

These are all nice justifications we give ourselves not to perform certain tasks, and it’s making up not to achieve our full potential.

Why did I like it?

I suffer from the same things as everyone else. Questions like “Will this work?” or “Am I ready to do this?” come up all the time, and now I know why. It’s not that I don’t want to do things, but it’s easier to find an “excuse” not to do it than actually grind for a long time and achieve the objective. Having the understanding that this exists makes you a little bit more prepared to avoid these destructive thoughts. It also guides you in what kind of thoughts you can train yourself to have to put yourself in the right mindset. Giving up before trying happens to all of us, but it’s something that we end up regretting over time.
