Tools: Firefox

This week something quite different from the usual tool’s suggestions that you would expect. The most used tool by everyone is as complex as under-appreciated. Firefox exists for several years, and it’s been surprising me every new release. It’s amazing what the team can achieve with hard players like Chrome or Safari (on the Mac).

The app

Firefox does something wonderful. Keeping its users safe. Actually, the Mozilla Corporation (that has the Mozilla Foundation behind it) has an amazing manifesto that I recommend you read that starts with “Pledge for a Healthy Internet.” This hits home for me because I’ve seen the creepiness that lurks without people realizing it over the years as an internet user. Ads that track you everywhere, companies that want to know everything about you (to sell you ads), and other more nefarious things are a danger to the wonderful thing the internet is. You can call me naive, but if people knew the amount of information collected when they visit one website, they would think twice (or not, I’ll give you that).

The problem it solves

First and foremost, it solves the issue of privacy. Mozilla is focused on protecting people’s privacy, while they could as well go for the creepy route that would make them a lot more money. I admire them for this, and I believe it’s not been easy over the years when the browser wars were in full swing.

Firefox provides a wonderful experience that makes you feel a little bit safer while doing anything online. There’s a healthy community of people building extensions and themes that make the browser even more useful. Some of them I’ve mentioned here like 1Password or DEVONthink.

Why I use it?

I use it because of privacy but also because it provides all of this with the least footprint. When I open Chrome, I feel my laptop levitating with the fans trying to avoid it from burning my computer’s insides. When Microsoft announced that Edge would be based in Chromium, some people got scared because this would make 2 big platforms using the same underpinnings. Competition is healthy in this arena, especially because our browser is the door to the world, being good or bad.

Finally, I want to urge you to use it more. Give it a try. There are also amazing mobile versions! I can’t recommend it enough.
