Book: Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us by Seth Godin

The term “tribe” is fashionable now, but we can trace it back to Seth Godin’s book by the same name. The concept of tribe is described as being a leader and gathering people around you with the same interests and willing to learn from you.

This is a leadership book and a good one at that. It explains that not only can you be a leader, but you should be one. The world needs people that take charge and build something new that benefits others. Having a tribe will enhance your idea, improve it, put it to the test, and make you a better person in the process.

Book premise

Building a tribe is not easy, but it is essential if you want to go forward. Seth Godin explains to us the importance of a tribe, what is a tribe in the first place, and how we can build one. Building a tribe is the essence of being a leader, the way to “break the mold” and create something new. Something that makes people excited, wondering, and following you in your interests. You don’t need a big following, but a dedicated one can give you the push you need to take you to a place of success.

I like a lot this passage from Goodreads:

Now the Internet has eliminated the barriers of geography, cost, and time. All those blogs and social networking sites are helping existing tribes get bigger. But more important, they’re enabling countless new tribes to be born—groups of ten or ten thousand or ten million who care about their iPhones, or a political campaign, or a new way to fight global warming. And so the key question: Who is going to lead us?

The Web can do amazing things, but it can’t provide leadership. That still has to come from individuals—people just like you who have passion about something. The explosion in tribes means that anyone who wants to make a difference now has the tools at her fingertips.

Why did I like it?

I like Seth’s writing, as I mentioned in the past. It’s somewhat special because it forces you to think for yourself. Showing you that there are no shortcuts and no way to become a leader with “x simple steps,” you’re forced to think for yourself. And by doing this, you’re already on the right path to create something different. Something new that other people will enjoy. Something that will enable people to be better and make you better in the process. I like this idea a lot, and I try to apply it here. I don’t want this website to be “yet another” place for technology, hence the books and podcast suggestions. I want people to have fun and learn in the process, and I hope I’m doing a good job.
