The join function is handy although I, don’t see many people using it. It converts an array in a string with a delimiter. At first, you may not see a direct usage for it, but think of the following examples:

  1. Get from a list of emails a string formatted that you can insert in the “To” field and send the email.
  2. Apply a custom format or do minor corrections to the data before displaying it. See the example below.
  3. Create a CSV line from a list

Usage

It follows a simple pattern.

  1. Collection
  2. String Delimiter
Example:

join(createArray('Apple', 'Orange', 'Pear'),',')

will return 

'Apple,Orange,Pear'

Notice that the join uses the delimiter to separate the values. The advantage of using the join function is that it doesn’t add it either at the beginning of the end of the destination string.

Notice that we can use a full string so we can get creative. For example


join(createArray('Apple', 'Orange', 'Pear'),',s and ')

will return 

'Apples and Oranges and Pears'

We’re doing two operations at the same time and adding a separator and a string at the end of the elements.

You can insert special characters that will display the information in a specific way. For example, if you want to have a list in an email but want to have one per line, so you can do:

join(createArray('Apple', 'Orange', 'Pear'),'s\n ')

will return 

'Apples\n Oranges\n Pears'

that when added will display:
Apples
Orages
Pears

Oh, and you can use special characters like emoji.

join(createArray('Apple', 'Orange', 'Pear'),'😀 ')

will return 

Apple😀 Orange😀 Pear

Finally, you can use arrays with different data-types, and it will work:

join(createArray('Apple', 2, 3),', ')

will return

Apple, 2, 3

Limitations

I tried to break it with a long array of 1000 elements:

I’m sure there’s a point where it breaks, but so far it looks good. If I find a significant limitation, I’ll update it, but so far it behaves marvelously.

Make sure that the second parameter is a string. If you try to insert a number, for example, you’ll get an error message:

InvalidTemplate. Unable to process template language expressions in action 'Compose_2' inputs at line '1' and column '2856': 'The template language function 'join' expects its second parameter to be of type string. The provided value is of type 'Integer'. Please see https://aka.ms/logicexpressions#join for usage details.'.

Also, make sure that the second parameter has one value, at least. If you’re using variables, these two errors are quite common, and Power Automates will break during execution.

Recommendations:

  1. Don’t build everything in the same formula. Above I did it because it’s just an example but keeps both the collection and the delimiter in separate variables. You have a couple of more actions, but it allows you to debug the Power Automate by having the individual values before the join, in case something goes wrong.
  2. Always have a parallel action if you’re converting a value to deal with issues resulting from issues in the join. They are not common but may happen, and you’ll have a failsafe in place in case something goes wrong. If you don’t know how to do it, read my article explaining the reasoning and how to do it.
  3. Don’t nest it. If you try, you’ll get an error because the join functions return a string and not a collection.
  4. Please note that formulas may have localization-based differences. For example, you should write “join” with “,” separating each of the arguments, but if your regional settings are set to Portugal, you should use “ ;” instead.
